A bill of materials usually appears in a hierarchical format, with the highest level displaying the finished product and the bottom level showing individual components and materials. A bill of materials (BOM) is a comprehensive list of parts, items, assemblies, subassemblies, intermediate assemblies, documents, drawings, and other materials required to create a product.
In the context of MRP software, the term ‘BOM explosion’ also refers to using the bill of materials to create demand forecasts for materials and components. What does BOM stand for?
If it is included and there aren’t any, then it will possibly break older applications that would have otherwise interpreted the file as plain ASCII. These applications will definitely fail when they come across a non ASCII character, so in my opinion the BOM should only be added when the file can, and should, no longer be interpreted as plain ASCII. The argument for using a BOM is that without it, heuristic analysis is
required to determine what character encoding a file is using.
